Saguni Lodge - Central Kalahari

Tucked beneath ancient riverine trees on the banks of the year-round Khwai River, Saguni Lodge is one of the most magical corners of northern Botswana. Even when the Okavango Delta runs dry in the low season, the Khwai still flows — drawing life to its banks and offering mokoro safaris, incredible birding, and dependable wildlife viewing year-round. Resident hippos grunt just beyond the deck, and if you’re lucky, you’ll witness elephants crossing the river at dusk. With riverfront bungalows, fire pits under the stars, and the sounds of the bush all around, Saguni is a place that truly stays with you.

Here Be Dragons Personal Highlights:

The Mokoro Experience

The mokoro is a uniquely Botswanan way to explore the wild — a traditional dugout-style canoe once carved by the river people of the Delta. Guided by expert mokoro polers, you’ll drift silently along the Khwai River, which flows year-round — even when parts of the Delta run dry. It’s one of the most peaceful and intimate ways to see wildlife up close, with frequent sightings of hippos, rare birds, and elephants crossing just meters away.

Life at the Hippo Pool

Just meters from the main area, Saguni’s resident hippo pool offers a front-row seat to one of Africa’s most iconic animals. Their deep bellows and playful splashes become the soundtrack of your stay. This water-level wildlife viewing — occasionally joined by elephants crossing nearby — is a signature feature of the lodge, making Saguni truly special in the Khwai region.
